PRP Hair Loss Treatment Sarasota FL

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for Hair Loss

Located in Sarasota, Florida, and serving all of greater Tampa Bay, Hair Transplant Center provides exceptional service and results designed to help our clients to restore their confidence.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a healing therapy that uses the body’s natural abilities to rejuvenate and restore itself.

PRP treatments work in conjunction with hair restoration techniques and other cosmetic surgery procedures. The growth factors found in platelets assist in improving skin quality, growing more hair, and speeding the healing process. PRP facilitates traumatic wound and joint tissue injury healing. Perhaps most surprisingly, the technique can combat male pattern baldness by stimulating the growth of transplanted hair. PRP treatments are primarily used in tandem with FUE hair transplant surgeries, but stand-alone PRP treatments are sometimes beneficial for hair loss.

PRP treatment methods utilize the patient’s own tissues, therefore, are considered entirely safe.

What Is PRP Treatment?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma therapy. To properly understand how this can help with hair loss, one should understand how blood is composed.

Plasma, which comprises approximately 55% of blood volume, is the liquid part of blood that contains water, blood cells, and proteins, which it carries throughout the human body. Blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, travel through the plasma, maintaining healthy blood pressure and removing cell waste.

When the body is bruised or cut, the body signals the platelets. Platelets then travel to the damaged site and create “tentacles” that allow them to adhere to one another, form a clot, and stop any bleeding. Platelets also emit chemicals that invite more platelets to help in the healing process.

How Does PRP Benefit Hair Loss Treatments?

When applied to hair loss treatments, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a three-step process. First, the blood is refined and separated by passing through centrifuge machines. The blood separates into three layers – platelet-poor plasma, platelet-rich plasma, and red blood cells. The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is injected into the scalp, which experts believe can assist the hair growth process by facilitating blood flow through the hair follicle.

PRP therapy typically requires three treatments four to six weeks apart, and the patient will then undergo maintenance treatments every four to six months. Hair restoration clinics may perform these injections along with other hair loss treatments or prescribe medication.

Is PRP Effective at Regrowing Hair?

PRP therapy is not new as a concept; it has been used since the 1980s to heal torn tendons and sprained joints. However, it has only recently been considered to help with hair growth. Some research has indicated there may be a scientific basis to support PRP for hair loss treatment, but the method is still new, and the results are not conclusive.

Science indicates that more efficient blood flow will support a healthy body and robust immune system, as blood provides the needed oxygen to our organs. Some growth factors found in blood platelets, specifically platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor (TGF), insulin-like growth factor (IGF), interleukin(IL)-1, and epidermal growth factor (EGF) may encourage hair growth.

Minor PRP Hair Growth Studies Are Encouraging

In 2014, a test group of individuals with hair loss used PRP to regrow hair. Participants were treated with PRP two times over a month. Results showed that their hair loss slowed between the first and fourth PRP treatment, and experts learned that PRP injections might be an easy and affordable solution. While more research and clinical trials are needed before PRP can definitively be called an effective stand-alone treatment, these results were promising.

While the debate about PRP as a method of hair growth is ongoing, its efficacy for treating wounds is proven. Therefore, the Hair Transplant Center utilizes PRP in combination with FUE treatments. After follicles are removed from the scalp, an individual’s own PRP is injected to help facilitate and accelerate healing.

Is PRP For Hair Loss Safe?

The PRP treatment for hair loss is accepted as a safe treatment, although it is not appropriate for people with bleeding or autoimmune conditions. As PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, there are no compatibility or rejection issues. Patients might experience pain and headaches, or their hair may fall out.

The Hair Transplant Center in Sarasota is committed to providing a full range of hair growth treatments at affordable rates, and PRP is no exception. A doctor or clinician may suggest a single PRP treatment in conjunction with your hair transplant or a series of PRP treatments if a hair transplant is not recommended.

Is PRP a Good Option For You?

Anyone concerned about hair loss usually has tried many solutions before coming to a hair loss clinic – including medications such as Rogaine and Propecia. PRP may be an alternative if no other method has worked for you.

PRP is typically not recommended for those with sepsis, liver disease, a low platelet count, or cancer. At your consultation, a clinician or physician from the Hair Transplant Center will evaluate your medical history to determine eligibility for PRP.
